Our History

The Ivory Keys was formed in December 2007 with a group of over twenty passionate and talented individuals. Since its inception, the club is fast becoming a fertile ground for budding SMU pianists to grow and blossom, by providing them with an avenue to refine their skills and showmanship as well as a platform to showcase their talents. As one of its key objectives, the club has also taken big strides towards establishing a close-knitted community for music lovers who enjoy the simple pleasure of sharing music and exchange ideas.
The Ivory Keys places great emphasis on the interpretation and performance of classical piano music. In addition to the solo works, the members are also exposed to interesting and challenging four-hand works, with the aim of experimenting more with two-piano and ensemble playing. As creating music involves the understanding of other instrumentation and form, the club is not restrained to just piano music. The club expands members’ music knowledge by having music appreciation sessions that will expose them to other music forms such as orchestral music, opera, and ethnic music.
The Ivory Keys has made its presence felt through performances in university events such as Convocation 2008 and SMU Open House 2008. The Ivory Keys has also given two highly successful public performances, Myriad (2008) and Seasons of Time (as part of SMU Arts Festival 2009).
The Ivory Keys will certainly add a new dimension to the Arts scene at SMU. The club looks forward to an ever more exciting musical journey and newer discoveries of the lyrical piano.
